Phentermine comes from the cross reaction of Benzaldehyde and the 3-nitropropane in a Henry Reaction variant. This reaction yields a nitro group. This group has hydrogen gas, which has to be reduced over the Raney nickel catalyst. After the reduction process, the combination will transform into a hydroxyl group that needs to be chlorinated using thionyl chloride. This chlorination yields two amino, two methyl, and one phenylpropylchloride. The product’s hydrogen gas will be reduced again to finally produce what is known today as phentermine hydrochloride.
